OPTASE MGD Advanced vs Systane Complete PF, Refresh Mega-3 and Retaine MGD Advanced

If tears evaporate too quickly, another watery drop may not be the only option worth considering. Lipid-containing lubricants bring oils into the formula. But the words “lipid,” “omega” and “MGD” can make several different products sound more alike than they are. OPTASE MGD Advanced has a distinct place in this category.
The oil layer, in plain language
Your natural tear film includes oils from the eyelid glands. They help slow evaporation. A lipid-containing lubricant is designed with that part of tear comfort in mind, while gland dysfunction itself may also need warmth, lid care or professional treatment.
The oil in a drop is not the same thing as taking an omega-3 supplement. Nor does the name MGD diagnose your symptoms. The useful comparison is the finished formula, feel and format—not which package uses the most eye-care terminology.

The case for OPTASE MGD Advanced

The plant-derived Sacha Inchi oil is the clearest formula distinction. Combined with trehalose and hyaluronate in a clear product, it makes MGD Advanced a compelling option if you want lipid-containing lubrication without choosing a traditional mineral-oil formulation.
The multidose bottle is another real advantage for regular use. You do not have to open and discard a vial every time you need lubrication. That can make the everyday routine feel simpler, especially at a desk or around the home. See the full MGD Advanced review for ingredients and directions.
Systane Complete PF: a strong option with a different structure

Systane Complete PF is designed around small lipid droplets and HP-guar in a propylene glycol lubricant. It is a serious alternative we carry, and some people prefer its feel. We would not suggest that mineral oil is automatically poor quality or unsuitable.
OPTASE earns its place beside it through its plant-oil formula and clear microemulsion approach. If Complete PF has not suited your experience, that difference gives you a sensible reason to try another formulation. If it works well for you, the choice is less urgent.

Refresh Mega-3: useful vials and a different plant-oil mix

Refresh Mega-3 includes castor and flaxseed oils with its lubricant formula. The single-use format can be convenient for travel or if you prefer a freshly opened container. It is not interchangeable with an oral omega-3 product despite the name.
Our OPTASE preference for a regular home routine comes down to the multidose format and the Sacha Inchi-based approach. Refresh remains attractive for people who value vials. Compare your actual use pattern rather than assuming one oil source wins for every person.
Retaine MGD Advanced: compare the current product

Retaine MGD Advanced uses light mineral oil and mineral oil in preservative-free single-use vials. The manufacturer has clarified that an earlier Retaine MGD formulation was discontinued; the current Advanced product should not be confused with that older availability story.
Against Retaine, OPTASE has a persuasive practical case: plant-derived lipids in a multidose format with supporting hyaluronate and trehalose. If those are priorities, we would put MGD Advanced first on the shortlist. We do not need to claim a head-to-head clinical victory to recommend it confidently.
A better drop still does not do every job
If your eyelid glands are involved, ask whether a warm compress and suitable lid cleansing belong alongside the lubricant. A lipid-containing drop can support comfort without physically correcting every gland problem.
This is one reason the OPTASE range is useful: you can choose complementary products rather than switching randomly between bottles. The routine guide explains that sequence in practical terms.
Our recommendation
Choose MGD Advanced when you want to explore a plant-derived lipid formula and prefer a multidose bottle. Choose by tolerance and everyday comfort, not by assuming “natural” guarantees safety or that a cloudy-looking emulsion must be inferior.
If you are not sure you need a lipid-focused product, the full OPTASE drop comparison may be a better starting point. Persistent dryness deserves an assessment rather than endless trial-and-error shopping.
Frequently asked questions
Does MGD Advanced treat blocked glands?
It is a lubricant, not a procedure to unblock glands. It can fit alongside the gland-care steps recommended for you.
Is Sacha Inchi oil better than mineral oil?
It is a distinctive plant-derived option, not a universally superior oil proven by direct clinical comparison. The finished formula and your tolerance matter.
Is Refresh Mega-3 a supplement?
No. This product is an eye drop; its oils are in the eye-drop formulation.
Is Retaine MGD still available as a brand?
The manufacturer distinguishes the current Advanced product from an older discontinued formula. Availability can vary; do not treat those products as the same version.
