OPTASE PROTECT: A Simple Hypochlorous Acid Eyelid Spray

A shelf full of eye-care products can make a simple question surprisingly confusing: which one cleans, and which one lubricates? OPTASE PROTECT belongs firmly in the cleansing category. It is designed for the outside of the closed eyelids and lashes—not for spraying into an open eye.
A short formula with a clear job

PROTECT contains hypochlorous acid, water and sodium chloride. It comes in a 100 mL spray bottle and is preservative-free. For shoppers who want a straightforward cleanser without a long list of botanical ingredients, that simplicity is an attractive feature. See the manufacturer ingredients and directions.
Hypochlorous acid is often shortened to HOCl. You may have seen the ingredient in other hygiene products, but a product made for eyelid use is the appropriate choice here. Do not substitute household disinfectant or make your own solution.
What does eyelid hygiene have to do with dry eye?
The eyelid margin is where lashes, skin and tear-film oil-gland openings meet. Keeping that area clean can matter when debris and crusting are part of the problem. It is a different task from adding lubrication directly to the eye.
PROTECT makes the hygiene step easy to understand: apply to closed lids as directed and let it dry. It is not meant to scrub away every kind of heavy residue on its own. A physical wipe or a gentle rinse-off cleanser may still be useful when there is visible material to remove.
What does the research tell us?
A small randomized study of people with blepharitis compared a hypochlorous acid hygiene solution with hyaluronic-acid wipes over four weeks. Both groups improved on some measures, while the HOCl group showed a greater reduction in bacterial load and improvement in tear-stability measures. Read the study.
This supports interest in HOCl eyelid hygiene as a category. It was not a trial proving that OPTASE PROTECT is better than Avenova or every other cleanser. The useful takeaway is that eyelid hygiene deserves attention; choosing a comfortable, appropriate format helps make that care consistent.

How to use it
Wash your hands and close your eyes. The manufacturer directs you to hold the spray approximately six to ten inches away and apply one pump to each closed eyelid morning and evening, then allow it to dry. Follow the directions on your own bottle.
If there is residue you need to wipe away, the manufacturer describes a gentle wipe after a minute. Keep pressure light. Do not aim into an open eye, share the bottle, or assume that more spraying will compensate for irritation.
PROTECT and Comfort Spray are not the same
OPTASE Comfort Dry Eye Spray is a lubricant applied over closed eyes. PROTECT is an eyelid cleanser. Both use a spray format, but they solve different problems and have different formulas.
This is an easy mix-up when shopping quickly. Focus on the purpose printed on the package, not the spray nozzle. If you need lubrication, choose a lubricant; if you need eyelid hygiene, choose a cleanser.
When a wipe or gel is preferable
TTO Wipes and Manuka Oil Wipes combine a formula with a physical wiping step. TTO Gel is a rinse-off cleanser. Those formats can feel more satisfying when you want to remove visible surface debris. PROTECT is particularly convenient when you want a short, low-fuss hygiene step.
Our take
The strongest case for PROTECT is straightforward: a short ingredient list, a generous bottle and a simple place in the routine. Compared with outside HOCl brands such as Avenova, the OPTASE ecosystem also makes it easy to coordinate cleansing with warmth and lubrication. That is a practical advantage, not proof of stronger antibacterial action. Our eyelid cleanser comparison covers the differences.
Frequently asked questions
Can I spray PROTECT into my eyes?
No. It is for cleansing closed eyelids and lashes, not instilling into open eyes.
Is it the same as OPTASE Comfort Spray?
No. PROTECT cleanses the eyelids; Comfort Spray is a lubricant for dry-eye symptom relief.
Will it cure an eye infection?
Do not use it as a substitute for medical assessment or prescribed treatment. Pain, discharge, light sensitivity or vision changes need eye-care advice.
Should I use it with a lid wipe?
Sometimes both can fit a recommended plan, but using several cleansers is not automatically better. Choose the simplest comfortable routine that addresses your needs.
