Step-by-step: how to apply Systane PRO

1. Check the bottle. Do not use it if the security seal, carton or bottle is damaged, if the expiration date has passed or if the emulsion changes color.
2. Shake well. PRO contains lipid components in an emulsion. Shaking redistributes them before each use.
3. Wash and dry your hands. Soap residue and water on the fingers can make handling less controlled.
4. Remove the cap. Keep the dropper tip away from fingers, lashes, lids, countertops and other surfaces.
5. Position your head. Tilt back, look upward and gently pull down the lower lid to form a small pocket.
6. Invert the bottle. Hold the tip above the pocket without touching the eye.
7. Instill one or two drops. Use only the pressure needed to create a controlled drop.
8. Blink gently. Close the eye softly for a moment; do not squeeze repeatedly.
9. Clear the tip. After use, follow the label instruction to shake the bottle downward to remove residual product from the tip.
10. Recap tightly. Store within the stated temperature range and away from children.

How to prime a new bottle

Before first use, hold the bottle upside down and dispense one drop to discard. Priming fills the delivery path and confirms that the protective bottle is working. A preservative-free multi-dose system can require more deliberate pressure than a conventional bottle.

If no drop appears, re-check that the cap and security elements are fully removed, keep the bottle inverted and apply steady pressure as the package diagram shows. Do not puncture, enlarge or cut the tip. A damaged dispensing system can compromise sterility.

Why does Systane PRO need shaking?

PRO is a translucent emulsion containing mineral oil and phospholipid-related components. Water and lipid phases need to be evenly distributed before use. Skipping the shake can make individual drops less consistent.

Shaking does not mean vigorously striking the bottle. A brief, thorough shake before each application is sufficient. If the emulsion changes color or appears unusual, do not use it.

How many drops and how often?

The current U.S. direction is one or two drops in the affected eye or eyes as needed. “As needed” does not mean there is never a reason to ask for help. If you require very frequent applications, wake repeatedly at night, or receive only minutes of relief, the diagnosis or treatment plan may need to change.

More drops at once do not necessarily last longer. The eye can hold only a limited volume; excess liquid usually spills onto the cheek or drains through the tear duct.

Can you use Systane PRO with contact lenses?

The product is described as compatible with soft contact lenses, but it is not intended as a contact-lens rewetting drop. Use it only according to the exact label and your eye-care professional's advice.

If lens wear repeatedly causes dryness, review wear time, replacement schedule, cleaning solution, lens material and fit. Lubricant drops can improve comfort but cannot correct an unsuitable lens or an inflamed ocular surface.

Can you use it with other eye drops?

When combining lubricant drops with prescription medication, many eye-care professionals advise separating products by several minutes so one does not wash out the other.
