What Is HP-Guar? How Systane PRO’s Gel-Matrix Technology Works
Most artificial tears look alike as they leave the bottle, yet they can behave very differently once they reach the ocular surface. The difference is not just “thick versus thin.” Polymer chemistry, pH, electrolytes, blinking and the condition of the corneal surface all affect how a lubricant spreads and how long it remains useful.
HP-Guar is the central delivery technology behind much of the Systane family. It is also the least familiar ingredient on the Systane PRO label. Understanding it makes the formula easier to compare with ordinary hyaluronic-acid drops, gels and lipid emulsions.
What does HP-Guar stand for?
HP-Guar stands for hydroxypropyl guar. Guar is a galactomannan polysaccharide obtained from guar beans; hydroxypropyl modification changes how the polymer dissolves and behaves in a formulation. In eye drops, HP-Guar is not included as a botanical remedy. It functions as an engineered gelling and surface-retention polymer.
Systane formulations pair HP-Guar with borate. The drop is formulated to remain dispensable in the bottle. On the eye, changes in pH and the presence of tear-film ions encourage cross-linking between the polymer and borate, producing a soft gel-like matrix.
How does the HP-Guar matrix form?
- Dispensing: the formulation leaves the bottle as a fluid drop.
- Contact with tears: the drop mixes with the ocular environment, where pH and ions differ from the bottle.
- Network formation: HP-Guar and borate interact more strongly, creating a viscoelastic matrix.
- Surface coverage: the matrix helps the lubricants spread and remain over the cornea and conjunctiva.
- Blinking: shear from blinking temporarily changes viscosity, helping the layer move rather than feeling like a rigid gel.
This is sometimes described as “in-situ gelling”: the more organized structure develops where it is needed instead of being packaged as a very thick gel from the start.
Why can that help dry eyes?
Aqueous liquid alone can drain rapidly through the nasolacrimal system or spill over the lid. A polymer network can slow that loss and help keep lubricant ingredients in contact with the surface. Laboratory and clinical work with HP-Guar formulations has explored several potential benefits:
- longer retention than a very low-viscosity saline-like drop;
- more even coverage over dry or damaged areas;
- reduced friction between the eyelid and ocular surface during blinking;
- support for tear-film stability and tear break-up time;
- delivery of lipid droplets across the surface in emulsion formulas.
These mechanisms do not mean HP-Guar permanently repairs the cornea or treats every cause of inflammation. It is a lubricant-delivery platform. Its value depends on the rest of the formula and the person's underlying condition.
Why pair HP-Guar with sodium hyaluronate?
Sodium hyaluronate—often called hyaluronic acid or HA in consumer copy—is a moisture-binding polymer. HP-Guar contributes the in-situ matrix; HA contributes hydration, lubrication and viscoelastic behaviour of its own. Alcon first brought that dual-polymer concept to Systane Hydration.
Systane PRO goes further by combining HA and HP-Guar with lipid components. In simplified terms:

Does HP-Guar target damaged areas?
Alcon's technical literature proposes that HP-Guar systems preferentially interact with hydrophobic regions exposed when the mucin-facing surface is disrupted. This is a useful model for explaining why a lubricant may coat compromised regions, but it should not be turned into a diagnostic claim. A shopper cannot see or measure that targeting at home.
The practical takeaway is simpler: HP-Guar is designed to create an adaptive coating rather than merely increasing the bottle's viscosity.
Will HP-Guar make vision blurry?
Any eye drop can blur vision briefly, especially if it forms an emulsion or more substantial lubricating layer. HP-Guar is shear-thinning, so blinking helps it spread and become less viscous during movement. Many users find it comfortable for daytime use, but individual experiences vary.
If clarity does not return quickly, if the emulsion looks discoloured, or if discomfort is significant, stop and seek advice. Never drive until vision is clear.
HP-Guar versus hyaluronic acid alone
Neither is categorically better. A simple HA formula may offer excellent hydration, a lighter sensation and fewer ingredients. HP-Guar adds an in-situ matrix that may improve retention and surface coverage. Systane PRO uses both, so the choice is not either/or.
When comparing with sodium-hyaluronate drops such as OPTASE Dry Eye Intense or Oasis TEARS PF, look beyond the words “hyaluronic acid.” Molecular weight, concentration, co-ingredients, active lubricant and delivery bottle all influence behavior. Two formulas that both contain HA can still feel and perform very differently.
HP-Guar versus a gel drop
Traditional gel drops begin thick in the bottle and may provide strong retention, sometimes with more transient blur. An in-situ gelling formula can dispense more easily and build structure after application. For severe nighttime symptoms, a dedicated gel or ointment may still be more appropriate. PRO is designed as a daytime-capable broad lubricant, not as a replacement for every gel.
What do HP-Guar studies show?
Small randomized trials and comparative studies have reported benefits in outcomes such as tear break-up time, ocular-surface staining and symptoms. A three-month randomized study of preservative-free HP-Guar versus tamarind-seed polysaccharide found improvement with both products and a significant tear break-up-time improvement in the HP-Guar group. Another double-masked study compared an HP-Guar gelling lubricant with carboxymethylcellulose.
